Rosalinde Reece - Bringing Joy and Magic Into The World

​Looking at a piece by Rosalinde Reece, you just can’t help but smile. Whether it’s a
drawing of people with birds on their heads, or of a dear friend dancing, each work evokes a sense of joy in life. And this is not an accident, but the intention of this artist. In her own words: “I just want to contribute to making the world a happier and brighter place.”

She has worked hard in her life to bring this effect into being, studying as the only child
in an adult class, then later at prestigious art schools such as the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and Parsons and The New School in New York City. She has taken to heart a quote that has been attributed to Picasso: “Learn the rules like a professional, so you can break them like an artist.”

You can see Picasso’s influence in her work, as well as the Impressionists. With her free-
flowing lines, she creates the essence of the subject of her piece, going beyond the strict
physical image, and in so doing, imbuing it with magic.

Originally from New Haven, Connecticut, she now lives in Portland, Oregon, where she takes commissions, and is involved in original projects. Her most recent project was doing a series of boxes covered in a theme of mythical characters, which she sold as a set.

Her first sale was to the IBM Museum of Young Artists when she was just 17, and she has been selling her art to eager buyers ever since. Recently, someone even bought one of her works of art from her as she was carrying it in her apartment elevator. She told me that this type of sale means even more to her than sales in big shows, because she sees that her art has made a difference in someone’s life. She is overjoyed when she can make someone’s world better and brighter. And that really is why we should support artists like Rosalinde, people who want to make the lives of others better and brighter, and then go ahead and work hard so that they can do just that, every day of their lives.
